Jacob Community Home Lab

  • Community Home Lab

  • Access to servers, cloud stack instance, resource budget per user

  • GPUs on demand, members can use as they want

  • Host private services, have a VPN, their own messaging, website whatever

  • GPU can do AI training, inference, run models – more of a cloud

  • Challenges

    • Determine cost to run 240v to run circuit for max load, potentially 2 circuits

    • 120v 30amp circuit? Jake – maybe 2 15amp circuits

    • Electrician quote

    • Verify with Jerry OK to have the electrician do it

    • How to finance the cost of the install

  • Questions

    • Is there a way to limit network bandwidth? Jacob: Should be small packets of text

    • If there was video streaming? Jacob: Could set limits to CPUs, time, ram, and network usage

    • Equipment? Has extra rack, 4 xenion 28 core, 8173 M, Rizen epic 7702 64 core – 1 is a blade server, the GPU own dedicated thing, GPUs 300W max = 300 x 8, around 3000W max

    • Device to track usage? KW type unit on the plug? Or a unit on the breaker box power monitoring device

    • How to measure success of project? Up to us, keep in mind loom wasn't used for years, no marketing budget

    • Steward responsible: not doing anything bad? Part of the code of conduct, Jacob: Ways to monitor, do what can w/ tools available – would be able to have monitoring to watch for that – no piracy, wouldn't allocate the storage

    • Make stuff available for us to see? Jacob: Admin access – admin account for access read-only user, one of the board members

    • Equipment bring in / on loan, how would you like to do it if you leave? Jacob: On loan – knows a guy that runs a nonprofit for enterprise servers, has a way to move data, would try to keep running then through that contact and a steward would step up

    • Dave has some servers, too big for current rack, maybe a rack exchange

    • Discord? We have slack

  • Action ITEMS

    • Quote on power installation from electrician, 120v 2x 20amp circuit

      • John estimate: 3000W is 120-190 per month approx

      • If get an in for 10 for the install, maybe that's enough and also would be nice to just have the dedicated power

    • Approval from Jerry

    • How pay for it, once we get quote

      • Example, if cost $3,000 Jacob can just pay for it – he cannot he said he's a college student (: – or we can do an in for $10 people can donate to pitch in and raise money that way – if get to threshold then board maybe pitch in from general funds

  • Discussion after Jacob left:

    • Bathroom exhaust fan

    • No crypto

    • No continual workload

    • Tool fee – setup when he joins

    • He would join and become a steward, and bring on someone to be an assistant steward
