Approval of Minutes from Previous Meeting

Vote to approve the minutes of the November board meeting

Yes: 4

No: 0

Result: Passed

Financials

  • We discovered that we were late paying insurance. Fortunately Meg was able to resolve the issue and our policy was reinstated with no lapse in coverage.

  • The board will ask Meg to prepare a year end report for the next quarterly meeting.

  • Matt requested the ability to view all the space's financial transactions.

Membership Update: 79

  • We recently added 2 new members

  • Brad has yet to make the new website send welcome letters to new members. He should also look back at the new members and see who has received their welcome letter and who has not. John volunteered to update the welcome letter template with new information (like our new website url).

New Laser Arrived!

  • Our new Boss HP-2440 laser and accoutrements arrived! Brad is working on the new external vent ducting that's required. The old lasers used 4" diameter ducts, the new one uses 6".

  • Brad (who is one of the Laser Stewards, in addition to being the brilliant, sophisticated and charming Secretary) made sure that the rest of the board is comfortable selling the old laser and all its accoutrements. Everyone was fine with this.

  • There is also an even older K-40 clone laser someone donated to the space years ago that should either be sold or given away.

  • Brad suggested putting in a door between the laser room and the Wood Shop. The garage door is generally supposed to be off limits as a passageway, but there are plenty of members who use it anyway, and Brad doesn't like that the ones who follow the rules end up having to walk so much further.

  • The door from the hallway to the Wood Shop should probably be fixed first. It's not closing on its own anymore.

Snow Day

  • Scheduled for December 6th, from 1 - 5pm, Brad is leading the event.

  • The plan is to use the new laser to make customized ornaments for guests. Guests can then paint/decorate their ornaments however they want. In addition, there will be free hot chocolate, free sugar cookies (plus cookie decorating), and other members available to give tours of the space.

  • So far nobody has expressed interest in the event through Meetup, but 25 people have on Facebook. Typically we can expect maybe 10% of those people to actually attend.

  • Dave suggested moving the ornament painting to the Wood Shop from the classroom. Brad agreed.

  • Other ideas for things to offer guests: turning on the video game machine in the classroom, and setting up the Linux station to play games.

  • Tom Hanks' brother does most of his voice over work, like when they have to replace cuss words for broadcast TV. While not strictly relevant to the above topic, the Secretary found this interesting enough to include.

Space Updates

  • Maggie's Rumble Room, a nearby eating and drinking establishment, is holding a Pinewood Derby on December 21st. At the beginning of the meeting, board members reminisced about their own childhood derby experiences. John recalled using a postal scale to measure his car's weight. Dave remembered melting down lead for his car. The lead came from really old antique typing.

  • Matt suggested holding a pinewood derby at the makerspace, but with no rules and no weight limit.

    • Belt Sander racing is an actual thing. People soup them up by putting chainsaw motors in them.

    • For a good time, cheese-wheel chasing apparently makes for entertaining videos.

  • We may need to redo the google calendar, there have been problems using it with the new domain.

  • One of the chairs in the classroom is missing a bolt. Matt and Dave are looking for a replacement.

  • The google group has seen an uptick in the number of people posting just to sell stuff. The board would like to avoid the group becoming a bunch of classified ads.

January Member Meeting

  • The board decided the next meeting will be on January 24th, 2026 from 3-5pm.

  • We kind of forgot to schedule this at the last member meeting.

Meeting Adjourned

  • "If you need to make it idiot proof, I'm a big idiot so I can help with testing."

  • When he worked as a software developer, the least helpful bug report Dave ever received went like this: "Ran program, got bug"
